Course Level: Beginner
Course Limit: 30
Format Requirements: The first half of the class will be both didactic and interactive, with three small break out sessions (10 minutes each) for group discussion and questions. The presentation will not exceed one hour and will be highly interactive, while providing clear messages and guidance for the development and use of Option Grids. In the second half of the session, delegates will be asked to form groups of three for the role-play. Each participant will be provided with scenarios and a rotating role play so each participant has the opportunity to use the Option Grid as a patient, clinician and observer. The workshop leaders will facilitate the role- plays, and feedback forms will structure the groups’ discussions. There are no prerequisites for participation.
Background: The benefits of decision support interventions (also known as decision aids) have been demonstrated in over 80 randomised controlled trials, but implementation remains difficult. Option Grids are one-page evidence-based summaries presented in a tabular format, with the potential to address current implementation challenges. They are designed for use in the medical encounter, in adjunct to existing information and support. This half-day course will give participants the opportunity to consider the relevance and application of Option Grids, and associated shared decision making communication skills. The steps involved in the design of an Option Grid, and development framework produced by the Option Grid Collaborative will be shared with the audience. This session will end with triadic role-plays where all participants will have the opportunity to use the Option Grids and observe their impact on the consultation.
Description and Objectives: This course is intended for health professionals, researchers, and medical educators who want to learn how to develop and use Option Grids; fast and frugal decision tools for use in the clinical encounter. Participants will also be introduced to communication skills and a consultation model that is aligned with the use and implementation of shorter decision tools, and will have the opportunity to use the grids and practice these new skills in simulations.
Objectives:
- Define the rationale and principles behind the use of shorter tools in shared decision making consultations
- Consider the relevance and application of Option Grids, and associated consultation model, in clinical practice;
- Understand the development process and steps typically taken when designing an evidence-based Option Grids;
- Learn shared decision making communication skills;
- Use the Option Grids in triadic role plays and receive feedback;
- Consider the effect and relevance of an Option Grid from a patient’s, clinician’s and observer’s perspective.
