Format Requirements: In this session, participants will: • Identify the difficult conversations that they avoid having; reflect on the impact of not holding them. • Learn techniques for delivering difficult feedback about performance or behavior – honestly and proactively. • Use a simple approach to prepare for a difficult conversation. • Practice holding a difficult conversation

Background: Can We Talk? Managing Difficult Conversations What makes difficult conversations so challenging? How can you use words to engage, problem-solve, and motivate? And what attitudes and behaviors can be developed to improve the process? This interactive session introduces strategies for dealing with tough topics, sharing difficult information, and managing interpersonal communication. Participants will practice mental, behavioral and verbal skills to feel more confident expressing yourself, understanding others, and transforming stressful conversations into learning conversations. It is focused on the kind of “difficult conversations all professionals in academic or medical care services have encountered, or at least, will recognize.
