Background: Racial and ethnic disparities in cancer care and outcomes have been widely reported. Understanding the sources of disparities and developing interventions to reduce or eliminate them is a high priority for the NCI and others, and a goal of many scientists who attend the SMDM annual meeting. This short course will address both conceptual and methodological issues in disparities research. The course will establish the scope and meaning of the terms race and ethnicity and review methods for measuring and defining them; explore analytical approaches and data sources for studying disparities; review and critique published studies of health and health care disparities; and discuss funding sources and dissemination strategies for disparities research.
