Biographical Sketch: Alvin I. Mushlin, MD, ScM, is Chairman of the Department of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College and Public Health Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. His academic career has focused on improving the knowledge base for clinical decision-making and policy formulation. He is a leader in the development and use of comparative effectiveness research (CER) methods for medical research.
His research quantifies the value and accuracy of diagnostic tests and procedures, in order to understand the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of interventions for common clinical problems and to measure the quality of medical care. He has published landmark studies in breast cancer research, on the accuracy of MRI in the diagnosis of MS, and on the cost-effectiveness of cardiac defibrillators.
He chairs PCORI’s Advisory Panel on Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment Options.
