Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women. The recently conducted NCI funded National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST) found that screening with low dose computer tomography (LDCT) scans compared to a control of chest x-rays, reduced lung cancer mortality among a high risk study cohort. The USPSTF now recommends lung cancer screening with LDCT in adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30-pack year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years (Level B Recommendation). However, many scientific, policy, and ethical questions remain when considering the implementation of this new lung cancer control paradigm. In this symposia, national experts in the fields of Radiology, Internal Medicine, Guideline Development and Policy, Ethics, and Economics will gather to present the science, note the controversies, and debate the issues. Sessions later in the conference will support networking among decision scientists interested in further research in this area. A lively interaction and discussion is expected.
