Biographical Sketch:
Matthew Banegas, PhD, MPH, is a health services researcher who is interested in studying the delivery, costs and value of cancer care. Dr. Banegas came to the Center for Health Research in April 2015, having served as a Clinical Investigator with CHR since 2013. Before arriving at CHR, Dr. Banegas completed a postdoctoral Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program in the Health Services and Economics Branch at the National Cancer Institute. There, he was part of an interagency consortium called HEROiC that aims to develop research resources and reduce the economic burden of cancer in the United States. Dr. Banegas conducted research at NCI that revealed serious financial hardships associated with cancer among working-age cancer survivors in the United States, particularly medical debt and bankruptcy. Prior to his fellowship at NCI, he completed an internship in cancer research at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Banegas received his MPH degree from New Mexico State University and his PhD in health services research, with a concentration on cancer prevention and control, from the University of Washington.
